Palau Requesens

Palace
This is the biggest residential palace to exist in mediaeval Barcelona. It belonged to Lluís de Requesens (1528-1576). The building we can see today is the result, above all, of refurbishment and extension in the 15th century. The Gothic structure and several mullioned windows remain from the original building.

This building, the biggest residential palace that existed in medieval Barcelona, belonged to Lluís de Requesens (1528-1576), a friend of king Felipe II and general governor of Flanders.

The original construction dates back to the 13th century, sheltered by the Roman wall, but the current building comes from a renovation and extension undergone in the 15th century, when it became the general governor of Catalonia´s house, Galceran de Requesens (1400-1468). The Gothic structure and some ajimez windows (window with a vertical divider between window panes) have been preserved from the original building.

The palace surrounds a large patio with a covered staircase which goes up to the main floor. In order to access this floor we must cross an ogival arched gallery, and on the ground floor there is a predominance of big semicircular arches.

In a new renovation in the 18th century the balconies were made and the internal quarters’ layout was designed. Its last renovation was in 1970.

It is the headquarters of the Reial Acadèmia de les Bones Lletres, an institution that promotes the knowledge of Catalan history and literature since 1790, and hosts the Galeria de Catalans Il•lustres, a permanent exhibition of famous Catalan figures’ portraits.
