The Catalan territory has become everything an enogastronomic reference in the world, you only need to see the 54 Catalan restaurants with a Michelin star this 2024. These are an international showcase of Catalan cuisine, and so is the distinction it has received Catalonia, that it will be the World Gastronomy Region 2025. This recognition will give even more visibility to the richness and innovation of Catalan cuisine. In 2016, Catalonia obtained the title of European Gastronomy Region, and next year it will become the first European region to achieve the distinction of World Gastronomy Region. What does this recognition mean? The World Gastronomy Region is an initiative promoted by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT). This title aims to promote those regions that actively contribute to improving the quality of life of their inhabitants, valuing food cultures, health education and sustainability and gastronomic innovation. This award is given by an independent international jury of experts, made up of professionals from various fields such as tourism, culture, hospitality and agriculture. A jury that valued the Catalan culinary legacy, its capacity for innovation, the great talent of the professionals and also the work of the producers of Catalonia, where food and drink are culture. New gastronomic tourism initiatives The 2025 calendar is full of events that contribute to enriching Catalan food and wine model, at the highest level. The new route Taste the Grand Tour of Catalonia stands out, a journey to discover the territory through the palate, following the itinerary of the Grand Tour of Catalonia. A Gastro Map will also be created of the Catalan food and wine offer, where each destination will highlight experiences and products, and where the wine Denominations of Origin (DO), Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) of Catalonia also appear. On the other hand, the great routes of Catalonia for food lovers will be arranged, that discover landscapes with flavour and make known where does what we eat come from. In 2025 the food companies that want to open up to the public and participate in the initiative Welcome to Pagès (Benvinguts a Pagès), can follow a professional support program to improve their competitiveness. It also highlights the celebration of the Catalan meal, a crowd-pleasing dinner in an emblematic street or public space in Barcelona in Festa Major style, featuring the most iconic dishes and recipes of Catalan gastronomy. New spaces to enjoy enogastronomy On the occasion of the World Gastronomy Region 2025 distinction two new immersive spaces will be inaugurated in Catalonia: the Centre of enogastronomic inspiration of Falset and the Sea cuisine space of Ametlla de Mar. The first will guide and allow visitors to discover the excellence of the wines of this area, such as those of DO Montsant and DOQ Priorat. The second will be a space to promote fish and seafood cuisine, contribute to the sustainability of the fishing sector and attract everyone who likes seafood cuisine. Join the Som Gastronomia project Everyone who wants to be part of this initiative, whether they are Entities, agents and people who belong to the productive, catering or wine and food tourism sectors of Catalonia can do so through the website Som Gastronomia.
