Springtime blooms and the great signature wine fairs With the arrival of the year’s first warmth and the awakening of the vines, Catalonia’s wine tourism calendar bursts into life. A landmark event on the Costa Brava is Vívid, the DO Empordà wine tourism festival that turns the month of April into a celebration beneath the Tramuntana wind. With more than sixty unique activities spread across the region, Vívid offers unconventional experiences such as guided tastings aboard a sailboat around Cap de Creus, pairings of wines and artisanal shepherd’s cheeses inside Romanesque monasteries, and acoustic concerts right in the vineyards, creating an undeniable draw for all kinds of visitors. Equally important, but at the other end of Catalonia, is the Primavera DO Terra Alta festival, which brings the whole region together in April with an extensive cultural programme featuring farmers’ associations, wineries, and restaurants. Meanwhile, the capital of the Priorat region hosts the iconic Fira del Vi de Falset in early May. This is the largest and most renowned fair in southern Catalonia, where thousands of wine lovers gather to taste the wide range of DOQ Priorat and DO Montsant wines, featuring guided tastings, concerts, and other leisure activities, as well as giving them the chance to take part in the many small-scale parallel tastings held in other towns in the region. However, spring in the Priorat also sees many other events, such as Poboleda Vins, Tast@Cornudella, the Rosé Tasting at the Falset Marçà Cooperative, the Fira Masroig Vi Solidari, and Tasta Vilella in La Vilella Alta. The spring offering is perfectly rounded off with the Wine Market during the Sant Jordi Medieval Week in Montblanc in April; the DO Tarragona Wine Fair; the Valls Va de Vins Fair, held in Valls on the third weekend of May; the Agramunt Wine and Cava Fair, also in May; and the modern ViBa fair in Manresa (the DO Pla de Bages wine fair), where the city decks itself in art, paired with Picapoll wine and designer culinary creations.
