The thermal waters are one of the great attractions of Caldes de Malavella. This city with character has an underground from which bicarbonated, sodium and chlorinated water flows at a temperature of sixty degrees, which makes it a thermal town par excellence. Already in Roman times it housed thermal baths and was named Aquae Caldae. The thermal baths of Puig de Sant Grau, built in the 1st century AD, are very well preserved and can be visited. The town council organises theatrical visits to its most emblematic corners year after year, where they describe historical events in Caldes from prehistory and Roman times to thermal exploitation. Currently, the city has several thermal centres, such as the Vichy Catalán Spa, where guests can enjoy relaxation and wellness treatments. Another attraction of the town is to climb the Malavella castle, of the 11th century, and the hermitage of Sant Maurici, scenes of numerous festivals and traditions. Both can be visited on a route that traces the town's medieval past. These two buildings are also part of the imagination of the town, since it is where the legend of the Malavella originates. According to the legend, the town of Caldes faced a feudal lady who lived in the castle. This old woman, evil and mysterious, suffocated the villagers with abusive taxes and is also blamed for the disappearance of several children in the village. Eventually, the people kicked her out and freed themselves from her tyranny. In honor of this history, Caldes de Malavella celebrates the Festa de la Malavella on the last weekend of April. The natural surroundings of this thermal town, located halfway along the Costa Brava and the Guilleries mountain range, invites you to do various nature activities. In the therapeutic forest of Can Fornaca, forest baths, peaceful and silent walks are organised with the therapeutic guidance of a monitor from the Sèlvans association, who gives participants guidelines for connecting with nature. Another option to get to know the surroundings of Caldes on foot or by mountain bike is to do a section of the St. James Way or the Volta a l'Ardenya, a low-difficulty route through the Ardenya-Cadiretes massif. For cycling families who want to cycle while enjoying culture, the thermal Green Way passes through Caldes de Malavella. This route between agricultural fields, forests and thermal springs joins three historic communication routes: the Camí Ral, the Carrilet route and the Barcelona-France railway. The practice of golf is also very popular in this city with character that has the Camiral Golf Resort. Its main field, the Stadium Course, is considered number 1 in Spain and one of the best in Europe.
