Come and discover them. The foundation of Tarraco and the Modernista cathedral of Nulles The winemaking identity of the DO Tarragona is inseparable from the Roman Empire. At the time when the majestic city of Tarraco was the grand capital of the province of Hispania Citerior, its wines were already considered extremely fine by classical poets and were exported in thousands of amphorae to every corner of the Empire. A guided walk through the impressive Roman monuments of Tarragona (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) serves as an excellent starting point to understand why the city’s vineyards and port have gone hand in hand for over two thousand years. During the late 19th century, this winemaking heritage was transformed through Modernisme with the construction of collective wineries that rise above the vineyards. The central emblem of this era is the historic Nulles Cooperative (popularly known as the Wine Cathedral of Nulles), a Modernista architectural masterpiece designed by the architect Cèsar Martinell, which astounds with its majestic columns and its harnessing of natural light.
