With peaks of 3,000 meters of altitude, in the Pyrenees of Catalonia you will find pine forests, glacial lakes, meadows of all sizes and shades, and extraordinary wild flora and fauna. If you want to discover all its secrets, you can find everything from small routes to high mountain itineraries or GR footpaths that will allow you to get to know the fauna and flora of this territory. The GR are long-distance trails which signpost the major routes that cross the Catalan Pyrenees. The GR 1: Sender Transversal covers the entire Catalan part of Pre-Pyrenees, from Empúries, on the Costa Brava, to Aragonese lands. The other great route that you can't miss if you like high mountains is the GR 11: Pyrenees Trail. This 800 kilometer route starts on the Mediterranean coast and reaches the Cantabrian Sea while following the southern slope of the Pyrenees mountain range. You need to be fit and an experienced hiker, and doing them takes a lot of time. We also highlight the Camí dels Bons Homes , the route that allows you to follow the footsteps of the Cathars through the towns, churches and medieval castles you find along the way. One of the most spectacular routes through the Catalan Pyrenees is the travessa Porta del Cel a> is a circular high mountain route for experienced hikers. On this route you can enjoy a rich and varied flora and fauna and discover the bear's habitat. You will open the "gate of heaven" at the top of Pica d'Estats (3,143 metres), one of the most emblematic and the highest in Catalonia, which offers extraordinary views. Also circular, but less demanding, is the itinerary of The Fifth Lake. This route follows the old routes used to move cattle through the Lleida Pyrenees on a route that will also allow you to enjoy the gastronomic specialties of the area. With the Ruta dels Estanys Amagats you will enter Cerdanya and a part of Andorra while embarking on a tour in which you can admire more than forty high mountain lakes. It is a circular route that is carried out in several stages and is very well signposted. When we talk about the Catalan Pyrenees, we cannot forget the Val d'Aran, a real paradise for hikers. One of the options to get to know this territory is the Camin Reiau, a route of 150 kilometers through the 33 towns of the Val d'Aran that will allow you to get to know both art and culture, history and nature. This is a small introduction of the possibilities offered by the Catalan Pyrenees, but there are many more routes to enjoy. If you want to do the entire routes, you will live an unforgettable experience, but if you prefer and choose only a part of any of these routes or, simply, do a day, it will also be an extraordinary experience. The Pyrenees of Catalonia must be breathed in, absorbed and known without haste. Do it and you'll always carry them with you.
