There is one for those who want to pack their rucsacks, head out the door and just walk; one for those who are more family oriented; or one for those who are passionate about wildlife. Walking is the best way to get closer to nature and Catalonia is a country that invites you to do so because of the great amount of Natural Parks and walking routes that can be found there. One of these routes is the Ruta Carros de Foc, which features the most spectacular places in the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park of . The route is 55 kilometres long with 9,200 m of cumulative elevation gain. This long-distance route joins the nine mountain refuges in a circular loop, in an excursion that can be completed in a week. You can do it in its entirety or choose a section. If you go through all the refuges they will stamp your ski pass and you can boast about having done the Carros de Foc, or Chariots of Fire route. What is its origin? In 1987 a group of park rangers made a courtesy visit to each of the nine shelters in Aigüestortes and finished the circuit in one day. It is not clear where the name comes from. Perhaps they were inspired by the film of the same name in which a group of British athletes were preparing to compete in the 1924 Olympics. There is no special signage of the route: some of the points share the signs of the GR-11, there are yellow wooden stakes and small piles of stones left by hikers.Under the stars of Els Ports Now we are heading south, towards the Parc Natural dels Ports, to do the Estels del Sud route. It is a route of almost 100 kilometres divided into 5 stages that links GR sections, routes and other trails. The stars will accompany you along the route: the path is marked with blue stars.Els Ports area is one of the wildest and most unknown corners of the country. The charms of the limestone massif are shared between the caves, gorges and chasms you will find along the way and you'll find many reptiles among the wildlife. More than 50% of the species present in Catalonia live there.Following the CatharsThe high mountain route Camí dels Bons Homes crosses the Cadi-Moixeró Natural Park and enters France. It joins the sanctuary of Queralt in Berga with the castle of Montsegur, in Ariège, France. This route recalls the exile of the Occitan Cathars, named the good men and good women, who promoted a pure and simple Christianity, based on spirituality, which was against the Catholic Church of the 13th century. It stretches across 200 kilometres, depending on the route chosen. It can be done in about 9-10 days and is of medium-high difficulty.Walking through the cloudsIf you want to experience the sensation of walking next to the clouds, this route is for you. It is called La Porta del Cel and it is a route through the the Alt Pirineu Natural Park which takes you to crown the highest peak in Catalonia, the Pica d'Estats (3,146 m).
