To visit l'Estartit is to dive into its seafaring origins. At the beginning of the 18th century, fishermen settled in this area and left their boats on the sand of the beach: large and fine sand, located between the mouth of the river Ter and the port of the town, divided into three parts: the Pletera beach, the Griells beach and the Gran beach. This seaside town has always been linked to the sea. Many years ago, it already had several artisanal salting industries, where herrings were smoked and anchovies were salted. Walking through the center of town, on Carrer de Santa Anna, was La Perola, a place where fishermen dyed their nets to darken them and make them more efficient when catching fish. It operated until 1890. The house is now known as the Clock Tower, as a sundial was installed there in 1878. In the same street of Santa Anna, you can see a pair of Indian houses. Two colonial-style buildings with large windows and balconies, built in 1875 by the Marquès brothers, who made their fortune in America. Another emblematic building of the town is Casa Salieti, designed by the nineteenth-century architect Rafael Masó in 1918. Santa Anna is the patron saint of the town, has its own church and around July 26 is the protagonist of the Festival Major de l'Estartit. Touring the natural environment of l'Estartit is to enjoy everything that the Montgrí Natural Park, the Illes Medes and the Baix Ter can offer you. The park organises routes to meet the freshwater turtle. Another option is to sign up for hiking routes on foot, by bike or even by horse-drawn carriage to enjoy the panoramic views. You can also visit the Castell de Montgrí, a medieval fortress located on the Puig de Montgrí. The Natural Reserve of the Illes Medes is a protected marine area and one of the most important reserves of marine flora and fauna in the Mediterranean and from all over Europe. Here, scuba diving lovers can see incredible meadows of posidonia, corals, starfish… Another tourist attraction is sailing on boats, with cabins submerged under water and large windows to admire the seabed. Estació Náutica de l'Estartit-Illes Medes offers a wide range of nautical activities such as sailing, water skiing, kayaking and snorkeling to enjoy the sea in this town on the Costa Brava. A sea that is the main attraction and the origin of the fishing village of L'Estartit.
