The Puig Vela Clàssica Regatta comes to Barcelona from 4 - 7 September. This international competition is a parallel event to the celebration of the 37th America Cup and both sporting events will coincide in the city. The classic sailboats of the regatta Puig Vela Clàssica will cruise the same waters as the vessels with absolute latest technology of the America’s Cup. The Reial Club Nàutic de Barcelona, on behalf of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, holds this regatta sponsored by the Puig company, and gaining standing as the leading race for fans of classic sailing in the Mediterranean. Sailing aficionados can enjoy the competition right from the beaches of Barcelona, as there are no viewing platforms or screens enabled for the occasion. 12-metre sailboats, a classic coming back The 17th Puig Vela Clàssica Regatta in Barcelona has a new incentive: the fleet of 12-metre boats is once again taking part in the competition. They had not officially competed since 1988, so the event in the Catalan capital is a unique opportunity to see these elegant and majestic sailboats which have been updated and restored. Four days of regattas will be held, where nearly 25 sailboats of this category will participate. Which boats are participating? The 17th Puig Vela Clàssica Regatta is a show worth seeing, where classic and vintage sailing boats will compete. Four categories have been established, based on design, age and dimensions. Vintage Boats, wooden or metal, dry-docked before 31 December 1949. Classic Boats, of wood or metal, in accordance with the original plans and dry-docked between 1 January 1950 and 31 December 1975. Big Boats, vintage and classic vessels, 25 metres. Modern Classic Boats, a new category that was incorporated last year. Only boats invited by the Organizing Committee, dry-docked between 1970 and 1984. Of these categories there are the following subdivisions: Boats from the Cangreja Period, dry-docked before 1950 with trapezoidal sails. Boats from the Bermudian Period, dry-docked before 1950 with triangular sails. IOR Classic Boats, dry-docked between 1970 and 1984. 12M JI Boats, 12-metre and international class.
