According to legend, it all started in a circular-shaped pond in the neighbourhood of Baix a Mar in Vilanova i la Geltrú. Long ago, with the water that came from the Foix reservoir, fish would come to the pond. One day, Mr. Roig, who had lived in Vilanova all his life, saw that after it rained, one of the orange-red carp in the pond would drink the water that ran down. One day when they were having lunch there, their porró broke and Mr. Roig took advantage of the waterspout to fill it with water, and then he would make the water trickle towards the mouth of the carp. He repeated this day after day, with perseverance and dedication, until he managed to get the carp used to drinking from a jug and eating with a spoon. The news quickly spread through the town and a journalist came to see the carp was drinking from a porró. The journalist asked Mr. Roig what the fish was called, to which he jokingly replied, “Juanita!”. From that moment on, many national and international media outlets were interested in the skills of the fabulous carp Juanita. A legend based on real events that tells the life of a very special fish for the people of Vilanova!
