The monumental past of Tarragona has made it the only city in Catalonia included in the world heritage list of the UNESCO. It has several monuments from the Roman era that have been declared a World Heritage Site, such as the walls, the amphitheatre, the theatre or the early Christian necropolis. To show this Roman past, events such as Tarraco Viva are organised annually, which faithfully recreate the life and culture of this period. Another architectural attraction of the city is the Cathedral of Santa Maria. Construction began in the 12th century on a 10th-century mosque, a Christian basilica and a Roman temple built earlier. Its cloister stands out, from which you can access the Tarragona Diocesan Museum, and also its main facade. If you do the full visit, you go up to the bell tower, a great vantage point to enjoy the views of the city. Tarragona is also a great outdoor festive and cultural scene. Between July and October it gathers several castle exhibitions and on September 23 it celebrates Santa Tecla, the major festival in honour of the patron saint, which dates back to 1321. The Central Market and the Rambla Nova concentrate much of its activity. Precisely on the promenade is one of the most visited places: the Balcó del Mediterrani, a place where you can enjoy good views of the Costa Daurada. According to a widespread local custom, touching the iron of the railing brings good luck. In the fishing district, Serrallo, guided tours are organised to see what their day-to-day life is like. The routes include a visit to the Port Museum and a trip on a golondrina. Take advantage of this to savour the typical dish of the city, romesco, based on fish or seafood and the well-known sauce in the restaurants of this maritime district. Visiting the Devil's Bridge is a good way to combine heritage and nature. This Roman construction was made to channel water from the Francolí River to the city. You can also enjoy the surroundings of Tarragona on beaches such as Llarga or Arrabassada and get close to the natural areas of the mouth of the Gaià and Tamarit-Punta de la Móra, where the Tamarit castle and the tower of watchtower of the Móra from the 16th century.
