One of the attractions of the towns and cities we visit is their green spaces. Parks and gardens are pleasant places to disconnect and relax, take a leisurely walk, sit on a bench, or share a coffee or a soft drink on a terrace. In recent years, Catalonia has looked to increase the green spaces in its towns and cities, promoting the creation of green urban areas. Viles Florides: a movement for greener towns and cities The Viles Florides movement was created with this idea. An initiative of the Confederation of Ornamental Horticulture Confederation of Catalonia (CHOC in its Catalan initials) that holds together more than 160 Catalan municipalities and is committed to transforming corners, streets, and parks and creating urban green spaces and gardens. This movement emphasizes the country's natural and scenic wealth. It looks to improve the population's quality of life with more welcoming and pleasant streets in cities and towns. Landscaping, ornamentation, and urban green culture are increasingly important issues in the context of climate change and the need to preserve our environment. The Viles Florides movement is not just about beautifying towns and cities. It is also about enhancing and recovering green spaces, often through local species that are more adapted to the environment and allow us to discover first-hand the most common vegetation of the territory. The Vilas Florides movement is also another reason to visit us. We don't just want an urban environment of cement and asphalt; we want to include more trees, parks, plants, and flowers. In short, we want to make cities and towns more pleasant, with fresher air and a more enjoyable environment. We want you to feel good when you visit us. This movement also considers some features, such as playgrounds for children or to promote environmental social awareness actions. The towns of the Viles Florides movement launch various activities to promote urban greenery: ornamental actions in the streets, creating green spaces, and planting trees. It also promotes events that enhance this commitment to a more sustainable environment. Many towns and cities celebrate, for example, the Tree Festival. In some of these towns, carpets are made with natural flowers once a year. Visit the towns and cities most recognized by the Viles Florides Once a year, the movement holds the Flors d'Honor Award, a great event that puts local communities into action. A jury oversees the urban green spaces in towns and cities in the Viles Florides movement, assessing their diversity or functionality. Each locality can receive between one and five Flors d’Honor. The highest number ever awarded has been four; nearly twenty cities have received it. Cities with four Flors d'Honor are Reus, Igualada, or Figueres; coastal towns such as Vila-Seca, Castelló d'Empúries or Roses; more urban areas such as Sant Feliu de Llobregat or Sant Cugat del Vallès; inland villages, such as Sant Hilari Sacalm or Cardedeu, and mountain villages such as Bagergue. The commitment to increase green spaces such as trees and plants on public roads, towns and cities is firm in Catalonia. It is a way of caring for the environment and improving the quality of life. An added value for your visit. In the Viles Florides, walking through the streets and squares will be another attraction. Feel the smells, see the colours, and let yourself be charmed by the aroma of nature without leaving the city.
