Some 30% of the Catalan territory is protected to preserve the natural ecosystem. In this way, the visitor can fully enjoy the spectacular landscapes and the flora and fauna of the Catalan natural spaces. Connect with nature from an environmentally friendly perspective. It doesn't matter if you are more of a mountain, sea or inland person, anywhere in our territory you will find a natural space that will surprise you. The National Park of Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici is the only national park in Catalan territory. Located in the high mountains of the Pyrenees, the main element of the park is water: with rivers, waterfalls and almost 200 lakes. This unique natural space also stands out for its imposing cliffs and spectacular wild flora and fauna. In the Pyrenees, you can also find other emblematic natural spaces, such as the Alt Pirineu Natural Park, the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park or the Capçaleres del Ter i Freser Natural Park. If you are passionate about volcanoes, in the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park you will find more than forty craters that make up a unique and exuberant landscape with holm oaks and beech trees. If you like to admire the geology of the land, Catalonia has two geoparks (Catalunya Central and Orígens) recognized by UNESCO for their geological and mining importance. In these spaces you can follow the footprints of the dinosaurs, discover how the Pyrenees were formed or admire the most hidden corners of mountain formations as particular as Montserrat. Other natural spaces of great relevance are the biosphere reserves. One of them is the Montseny Natural Park, where you can admire an extraordinary biodiversity. The other is the Terres de l'Ebre, a territory of bird migration and a paradise for all ornithology fans. In this unique natural space you can observe the more than 370 species that live there permanently or temporarily. Following the coast, in the center of the Catalan coast and right next to Barcelona, the Llobregat Delta Protected Natural Area is the habitat of many birds in an environment that it has very particular characteristics due to its location. In the far north, the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park is ideal for observing the birds that live in this spectacular environment. Beyond the landscape diversity, and the flora and fauna, all these protected natural environments are also spaces with an extraordinary cultural, historical and gastronomic legacy. Enjoy nature; take routes on foot, by bike or on horseback; observe wild flora and fauna; do rock climbing, canyoning and other adventure sports. Live a full experience, immerse yourself in nature, discover unique landscapes and get to know the culture and traditions of its inhabitants. Catalonia is nature in its purest state.
