The Serrallo neighbourhood represents the seafaring roots of Tarragona. Located next to the port of the town, it is considered one of the most important in the Mediterranean. It is a small world that smells of the sea and breathes it. An authentic place where you can see how the fishermen mend their nets while catching up, or enjoy the sea views from the Banya lighthouse, at the end of the Llevant dike. This fishing neighbourhood has managed to preserve its essence over the years. The Fishermen's Guild of Tarragona organises guided tours to see how the boats arrive loaded with catches, and, if you fancy, you can witness the fish auction at the Tarragona Fishermen's Guild market. Visit the Port Museum, where you can learn about its history and learn how it works. Enter the Blue Observatory, a multi-sensory and multimedia museum space that shows the species that are caught on the Costa Daurada, the fishing arts of the area and the history of the neighbourhood. To learn about a day in the life of the fishermen, sign up to do the heritage route of the Port of Tarragona: a route that you can do on foot or by bike, along which you will discover about twelve elements of the port's heritage. Another way to get to know Serrallo is to get on board a golondrina and enjoy the view of its seafront, docks and breakwaters. Like any other neighbourhood it also has its church: that of Sant Pere Apostol, patron saint of fishermen. It is a neo-Gothic building that dates back to 1880. It even has a clock, which replaced the trumpet blasts that were made many years ago to mark the beginning and end of sailors' working days. The Banya lighthouse, located on the Llevant dike of the port, is another of Serrallo's attractions and has a lot of history behind it. Initially, it was located in the Ebro Delta and operated from 1864 to 1978, when it was replaced by a new one and moved to the Port of Tarragona. Once restored, it was installed on the Llevant embankment. You cannot leave Serrallo without enjoying, in the restaurants of this maritime district, the typical dish of the city: fish romesco, which combine the well-known sauce with seafood or fish. If you visit the neighbourhood in October, enjoy the Tastets del Serrallo, a gastronomic initiative that will allow you to taste the ranxets that the people of the Serrallos made both on the boats and at home. What do you think of trying an octopus romesco with aioli, burnt garlic with catshark or nails? Ask for a table!
