Located forty kilometres from Lleida, in the interior of Catalonia, Penelles was a rural village like any other. In 2016 everything changed. The village held the first edition of the Gargar Festival of Murals and Rural Art. Its main goal was to energize the village and to add value to it. And in a very short time, Penelles, also known as the “graffiti village", has become a real phenomenon and an international landmark thanks to the over 125 street art murals that can be seen there. p> The festival is usually held at the beginning of May, but all the graffiti walls can be seen at any time throughout the year. During the three day festival, between twenty and thirty artists design and paint different areas and spaces provided by the village. If you love street art and music, you cannot miss this young, rural and urban festival that has managed to put the village of Penelles on the map. If you also want to get to know better the area's natural environment, you can take any of the walking or cycling routes just outside the village that will take you through the Bellmunt-Almenara drylands. A first-rate landscape with a flora and fauna that can remind the one in North Africa rather than a typical European one. A great way for anyone willing to discover new environments to get to know the area surrounding the village where any street art enthusiast must see. In Penelles tradition and modernity meet, the urban joins hands with rural world to offer all its visitors a unique and unforgettable experience.
