Llívia is a Catalan town surrounded by French territory. After the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659), Spain ceded 33 municipalities to France, but Llívia was excluded as it was considered a "town". This historical anecdote has determined the life of this small town for the past centuries and has forged its identity: a Catalan village within the French state. People from Llívia, pride themselves that the town is known, amongst many other things, for this historic establishment Esteve Pharmacy. Founded at the beginning of the 15th century, records have been found that date back to 1594. This fact makes it the oldest and best-preserved pharmacy on the European continent. Apothecary Jaume Esteve was one of the first owners and his family has been in charge for over 23 generations, ensuring its conservation through the centuries until 1942. Since 1981, the contents of the pharmacy have been part of the Municipal Museum of Llívia collection. This way, the furniture, laboratory instruments, preparations and formula books, among many other elements, can be preserved. If you want to know how the formulas were prepared during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, think no more, come and discover the history of the oldest pharmacy in Europe. You will also enjoy a privileged natural environment with endless routes for hiking, mountain biking, adventure sports and, in winter, alpine or cross-country skiing. If you come to Llívia, don't forget to visit the castle, from where you'll enjoy one of the best views in all Cerdanya, and the church, with its circular defence towers. Llívia is where history, culture, nature and sport meet.
