Also known as birdwatching or birding, bird tourism is one of the most popular ecotourism activities around the world. Ornithology in Catalonia does not go unnoticed. From the south to the north there are 73 Special Protection Areas (SPAs), where around 400 species can be observed. Most of these species are native, but there are also many migratory species that come to Catalonia to breed. Come meet them in their habitat. Catalonia is a geographical crossroad that hosts a large number of migratory birds on their annual routes. European and African migration routes converge here and offer a unique spectacle for bird lovers. From the deltas to the Pyrenees, you can observe the majesty of species such as the flamingo, the gamarús, the pine nut or migratory birds such as the black falcon and the wagtail. The Catalan territory has a network of natural parks that are true ornithological sanctuaries and migration crossroads. In the south we find the Ebro Delta, which, with an extension of 320 km2, is a unique place in Catalonia where native and migratory species can be observed, such as the kingfisher, the pink flamingo or the white martin. Every year, the Delta Birding Festival is held, where you can take part in a full program of activities with talks, workshops or field trips. Very close to Barcelona, in the Llobregat delta, there is a space that hosts up to 15 species, mostly migratory. The cormorant, the feathered cabuchon or the spoonbill are some of the species that live there and that can be observed from the designated points within the protected natural area. Another great coastal area to observe birds is the Empordà wetlands. It is a privileged environment that allows the observation of up to 50 species of birds, some of them as curious as the blue-throated grebe, the puffin or the majestic osprey. A sustainable adventure in a top quality natural environment. Although the marsh and wetlands are where most species of birds are concentrated, the valleys of the Pyrenees are the favorite territory of birds of prey and scavengers, where more than 180 species can be seen throughout the year. If you want to observe the spectacular flight of the vulture, the buzzard, the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon or the kite, don't hesitate any longer. Enjoy the wildest nature and let yourself be amazed. Catalonia is the paradise of birds and of all birdwatching fans.
