From the mountains of the Pyrenees to the coast covered by the Mediterranean Sea; from the main cities to the small towns in the interior. In any part of the territory you will find traditional celebrations that will allow you to discover the richness of Catalan folklore. And, in turn, you can enjoy samples of popular culture, good gastronomy and mass celebrations that, very often, they last for days and nights. Catalonia is a party territory and at the same time it is proud of its traditions. It would be almost impossible to list all the popular festivities in Catalonia. Each city and each village lives its traditions in its own way, but they share many elements in common. An example of this is the major festivals of towns and cities, which are celebrated mainly during the hottest months. Can you imagine spending the whole summer going from party to party? In Catalonia it is possible. Even the smallest town has its celebration, which is usually dedicated to some religious figure. Among the most famous major festivals are the Santes de Mataró (July), Sant Bartomeu de Sitges, the Toca-sons Festival in Taradell (August), the Tura d'Olot Festival, Santa Tecla in Tarragona or La Mercè in Barcelona (September). But in any town in Catalonia you can immerse yourself in the popular festival through celebrations that mix traditions, fire, music and extraordinary nights. You will also discover elements of popular culture, such as the devils, who roam the streets with their bath of fire and sparks. Other popular figures are giants and capgrossos or dance groups that perform various traditional dances in the parades, such as the stick dance (in catalan, ball de bastons) or the shepherd dance (in catalan, ball de pastorets). Catalan popular culture presents a great richness and, whatever your destination is, it will definitely surprise you. One of the best-known Catalan cultural references is that of castells. The tradition of making human towers dates back to the 18th century and is now experiencing a new golden age. You will be amazed if you witness any of the casteller days, with constructions of eight, nine and even ten floors. If you visit Catalonia between March and November, you will surely have the opportunity to enjoy it. Castles are one of the Catalan traditions that have been declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. And it is not the only one. This list also includes two other festivals that are celebrated in Catalonia. The Patum de Berga, of medieval origin, which is celebrated for Corpus Christi. Music, fire and gunpowder are the protagonists of this celebration, which in its main event turns Berga's main square into a fiery inferno under the enchanting rhythm of the timpani. An experience you won't forget. The other celebration recognized by UNESCO is that of the descents of faults that are held in various towns in the Pyrenees between June and July. Enjoy this ancestral celebration dedicated to fire and the summer solstice in a unique natural environment such as the Pyrenean mountains. But the Catalan festive and popular heritage is much more extensive. You will be able to experience and feel the Christian tradition rooted in the territory during the Holy Week, where the Tarragona processions, the Passions of Esparreguera or Olesa de Montserrat or the Dance of the Virgins stand out. The Festa dels Tres Tombs de Sant Antoni Abat, in January, is one of the most popular among children, who will enjoy seeing horses and donkeys parade through the streets of many towns and cities. Christmas, with the Parade of Kings as the most crowded event, and Carnival are also festivals of religious origin that are very much alive in the territory. In Catalonia you will find a wide range of festivals, some of medieval origin, such as Montblanc Medieval Week or Vic Market; and others linked to agriculture, such as the Great Calçotada Valls Festival or the Rice Harvest Festivals in Terres de l'Ebre. There are more solemn celebrations and others more transgressive. Some have centuries of history and others are more recent, but all of them invite you to experience Catalan culture and traditions.
