Start this section’s journey by visiting the architectural spaces of the old Tarraco. Afterwards, drive towards Terres de l'Ebre, following the course of the Ebre River and the Delta. You can pedal along an old railway track converted into a greenway, search for the footprints of Picasso and Gaudí and taste the excellent wines of Priorat before arriving in Lleida. STAGE 1: The Roman Empire on the Costa Daurada Tarragona is the starting point of this stage. Walls, amphitheatres and necropolises are very well preserved in the historic centre and remind us of the presence of the Roman Empire in the city. The route takes you to Reus, Gaudí's hometown. The vermouth trade brought a lot of wealth to the town, which allowed it to build many modernist-style buildings. Discover them following the modernist itinerary through the town. From Reus, you can go as far as Cambrils, the gastronomic capital of Costa Daurada and taste a romesco suquet. While you are here, you could enjoy yourself and go to PortAventura World. STAGE 2: By boat through el Fangar Bay In the fishing village of Ametlla de Mar, one of the most iconic villages in Costa Daurada, you can have a unique experience: swimming among Mediterranean redfin tuna. On your visit to Terres de l'Ebre, you can stop at l'Ampolla’s harbour and take a boat tour to see the cliffs and into el Fangar Bay, where you can taste oysters and mussels. You can end the day by sleeping in one of the Delta de l'Ebre’s traditional fisherman's huts. STAGE 3: The natural world of Delta de l'Ebre The landscape is completely transformed in the Delta de l’Ebre Natural Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve. The rice paddies and the immense plains coexist with dunes, riparian forests, and coastal lagoons, which are the habitats of more than 300 species of birds. The next stop is Tortosa, where you will see its Jewish heritage and medieval splendour. The stage finishes in Horta de Sant Joan, where the landscapes of the Ports Natural Park inspired Picasso, who spent a long season there. STAGE 4: Nature and history overlooking the Ports You start this stage cycling on a bike. From Horta de Sant Joan, you can take the Val de Zafán Greenway, a cycling route that connects several villages in Terres de l'Ebre up to Teruel. The wine cathedrals of Gandesa and Pinell de Brai are the next stop. Cèsar Martinell, Gaudí's disciple, designed the modernist buildings of the winery cooperative; the buildings were created to optimize the productivity and quality of the wine. Following the course of the Ebre, you will arrive at Miravet, where its Templar castle offers a magnificent aerial view of the river making its way through the Terres de l'Ebre. STAGE 5: A glass of wine in Priorat The itinerary continues in this fifth stage following the course of the Ebre to Castellet de Banyoles, in the district of Tivissa, where you can stop and visit one of Catalonia’s largest fortified Iberian villages. After that, you will get to the Serra del Montsant Natural Park, through winding roads with incredible views of this region dedicated to wine production and where the terraced vineyard landscapes of the DOQ Priorat and the DO Montsant sculpt the landscape. Falset and the small villages of Gratallops, Vilella Alta or Torroja del Priorat have wineries with modernist buildings. To discover the origins of Priorat's winemaking tradition, you can visit the Cartoixa d'Escaladei. STAGE 6: Spirituality and rock art in the Prades Mountains The day begins with a visit to the medieval walls of Montblanc, one of the best preserved in Catalonia. After visiting them, you will travel to the Monastery of Poblet, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. One of the monks will reveal all its secrets and guide you through the most relevant rooms. Continue your way through the caves of l'Espluga de Francolí, a great opportunity to see how life was in prehistoric times. You will finally reach your destination, the Vimbodí Glass Museum, where you can see the process of creating pieces of glass. STAGE 7: Olive oil, stones, and wine in Pla d'Urgell The last stage opens the doors to the charming village of Guimerà. Its maze of cobbled streets takes you to the castle, which offers a panoramic view of the Vall del Riu Corb. Leave Guimerà behind, and the route will lead you to Vallbona de les Monges. This village is home to one of Catalonia's most important female Cistercian monastery, with a nun congregation still living there. After taking a guided tour through the monastery, you can continue the route and go through Belianes, Arbeca and Borges Blanques, where the excellent DOP Garrigues olive oil is produced. You will arrive at Estany d'Ivars and Vila-sana, where you can take a boat and go birdwatching. The stage ends in Lleida, in front of the beautiful monumental complex of La Seu Vella and La Suda Castle.
