The different means of transportation in Catalonia are adapted to those citizens or visitors on holiday to Catalonia with a disability. Any visitor, during their short stay, will feel at ease using the public transport network regardless to their needs. Traveling by train, bus, underground, or tram is no obstacle for people with a disability. It should also be noted that airports are highly accessible spaces that make entering and leaving Catalonia very convenient. There is still work to be done and many facilities need to be adapted, this is why, in some cases, it’s also good to plan ahead and notify your traveling operator. For instance, when traveling by plane, you need to contact the airline and notify the needs of travellers with reduced mobility to access the aircraft. The airline is also responsible for notifying the destination airport. So when the traveller arrives, assistance is guaranteed. In addition, the main airports in Catalonia (Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Girona and Reus) have facilities adapted to any need. There are ramps and lifts to access all areas of the airports, special parking spaces, rest areas and adapted bathrooms. If you travel by train you will also find many facilities. Accessibility depends on the operator managing the infrastructure. On the lines of the Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) Railways, more than a hundred stations in its network are adapted. In the case of the short and mid distance lines, operated by Renfe, you must inform yourself before making the journey. Even though there are trains that do not yet have adapted access, in most stations a service is available on demand. Finally, regarding the long distance and high speed, you can book seat for travellers with a disability in advance. In the city of Barcelona, the metro service are more accessible every day. Despite being century-old network, in the last decades intensive improvement works in stations and trains have made them more accessible. The great majority of stations have elevators to the street, halls and tracks, entrances are wide for wheelchairs or prams. In addition, ticket machines have a navigation system for blind or people with low vision. On the other hand, all trams have accessible doors. You will also find it very easy to get around the city of Barcelona by bus. The entire fleet is equipped with access ramps, audible and written stop information. This is also the case in many of the main towns in Catalonia with a bus network. In the case of long-distance bus lines, we recommend contacting the operating company well in advance. Although there may be vehicles that are not yet adapted, an on-demand service is offered managed by each company. Finally, in the case of private transport, if you have a reduced mobility, you can request a parking card issued by the Generalitat de Catalunya. This card allows you to drive through pedestrian areas or park in areas with limited hours or designated areas used for commercial loading and unloading.
