Catalonia, the destination for wine tourism

Book
Wine and cava are a part of Catalan history. Each glass preserves a small piece of the past, which is why wine tourism in Catalonia is about much more than wine tasting. Enjoy the experience of taking a sip of wine alongside the vineyard, sleeping in a winery, getting a vinotherapy treatment or exploring the vineyards on a burricleta or a segway. When you have a glass of wine again, all the memories will come back.

12 DO, 12 ways of understanding life in the region
Wine tourism in Catalonia has many faces, since it is a land of contrasts: the agricultural landscape of Priorat, where the elevated terrain in terraced llicorella soil requires the planting of small plots, which gives the wine that unique taste; the vineyards by the sea that are twisted by the winds of the Empordà DO; grapes grown at 1,000 metres altitude on the Vi de Lleida route; or the vineyards of Bages, protected by the bulk of Montserrat. There are 11 wine Designations of Origin and one cava Designation of Origin, which means there are twelve ways of understanding life in the region, separated by landscape.

Wine tourism to discover culture and heritage
You can also learn about the Catalan architectural and cultural heritage through wine tourism. Have you heard about the wine cathedrals? The writer Àngel Guimerà christened them as such because of their majestic structure and architectural similarity to the religious buildings. They are wineries designed by some of the most important Catalan modernist artists.

Plan personalised wine tourism getaways.

It's your turn to taste the landscape of Catalonia in a glass.

Each winery has its own formula for making wine. In Catalonia, you can find more than 300 that open their doors to give you a wine tourist experience.

Viladellops Vinicola

Finca Viladellops
Viladellops is a small village established in the year 930. The medieval tower still survives from the time when it served as a fortification and a communication tower with Olèrdola Castle. Currently, the town is made up of eighteen farmhouses, all perfectly preserved, that contribute to maintaining the atmosphere of a hundred years ago.
Vinícola de Nulles
Vinícola de Nulles
The cooperative Vinícola de Nulles was established in 1917. Shortly thereafter, a rival appeared in the form of another cooperative in the same town. Both merged as a result of the Spanish Civil War. The cellar, where the Vinícola de Nulles wine is still made, is a Modernista-style building designed by the prestigious Vallesan architect Cèsar Martinell. Inaugurated in 1921, members of the cooperative helped build it.

Celler el Mas Roig

Celler Masroig
El Masroig, founded in 1917, is one of the largest and most important wineries in the region of Priorat, with close to 500 hectares of its own vineyards protected under the DO Montsant.

Clos Pons

Clos Pons
Since 1945, the Pons family has continuously been engaged in growing olives and producing olive oil, to the point that Grup Pons became a company of reference in the sector. Inheritors of this tradition, in 2005 the family set out to recover the Les Garrigues vineyards, creating Clos Pons Winery, located between the towns of l'Albagés and Pobla de Cérvoles, and producing DO Costers de Segre wines.

Codorniu
The Codorníu cellars are beyond a doubt the most well-known and visited cellars in Catalonia. This is true not only because Codorníu was the first company to produce cava in Catalonia, led by cava pioneer Josep Raventós i Fatjó in 1872, but also on account of the architecture of the building itself, a spectacular Modernista-style work designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch between 1895 and 1915 and later declared an historic-artistic monument.

Mas Vicenç is a family enterprise started in 2005 (first vintage) but arising from a long vine growing and winemaking. tradition Vicenç Ferré began his oenology studies in 2000. This motivated the family to remodel the family house to include a small but modern cellar where they could make quality wines from the grapes harvested from their 35 hectares of vineyards.

The Sant Josep de Bot Agricultural Cooperative, founded in 1944, today has more than 300 members in its various branches and services in the areas of wine, olive oil, almonds, bread ovens, grocery stores, sweet fruit and plant protection products. It embarked on vine growing in 2005, with a clear focus on quality. The Cooperative renovated the entire process of how the grape enters the cellar, installing stainless steel machinery and introducing thermovinification in the winemaking process as well as a team of young wine experts that supervises the members' vineyards throughout the year.

The Carols have a long family tradition in viticulture and and the production of wine and cava for private consumption. In 1996, they decided to share this tradition with others and began selling their superb cava. Today, they produce a limited amount of 50,000 bottles, which Joan Carol disgorges manually.

The Sumarroca family produced wine for several generations in the town of Llimiana, in the Pallars Jussà region. In the 1980s, this winemaking tradition, led by Carles Sumarroca, was moved to DO Penedès. At this time, they installed the winery for the production of wine and cava one of the two estates they had acquired, Molí Coloma (in Subirats), consisting of 36 hectares. The other estate, Heretat Sabartés (in Banyeres del Penedès), is made up of 25 hectares. However, it was not until 1999 that the firm became the largest winery in the Alt Penedès region in terms of extension of the land, following the purchase of the old Marquès de Monistrol Estate consisting of 403 hectares, which they christened with the family name.

Can Ràfols dels Caus is a 450-hectare estate in the northern foothills of the Garraf massif. The manor house dates back to 1634. It was abandoned and had fallen into disuse when, in 1989, Carlos Esteva inherited it and installed a cellar for making wines to his taste, thereby recovering a family tradition that had brought the family prestige with the winning of various medals in 19th century expositions. The farmhouse was restored with great care. Esteva's passion for contemporary art gave it a very personal touch, contrasting the traditional architecture with modern decorative elements.
