Catalonia is the land of musical festivals, some of world-wide prestige. Since 1995, the Primavera Sound Festival is marked in red in the agenda of international followers of pop and rock music. For fans of electronic music and digital creation, the Sónar event is a basic part of their musical agenda. The good summer weather allows outdoor festivals to be held, such as the Cap Roig Festival, the Peralada Festival, the Porta Ferrada Festival, and the Pedralbes Gardens Festival, which feature the presence of international music stars.
El Vendrell, the land of Pau Casals, one of the most important cellists and orchestra conductors in history, is a regular stop for the best performers and conductorrs of opera and classical music, as well as international orchestras. The classical music festival takes its name.
For lovers of Schubert, in August, Vilabertran organises the Schubertíada in a space as cozy as the monastery of this Empordà village. And for lovers of classical music and architecture, the monasteries of the Cistercian Route offer a cycle of concerts in the months of July and August. Do not miss the chance to visit the Pyrenees and enjoy the Ancient Music Festival of the Pyrenees.
Outside the summer, classical melodies seduce lovers of classical music in scenarios as symbolic as the Liceu grand theatre, the Palau de la Música Catalana, and the Auditori.
The sardana has been the symbol of Catalan identity since the mid-nineteenth century. But traditional music is much broader. It boasts outstanding examples such as the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat (Red Book of Montserrat), through to the traditional dances and music, the habaneras originating in the crossings of the Catalan soldiers who were going to fight Cuba in 1898, the choirs of Josep Anton Clavè, among which the Orfeó Català stands out, and even the Catalan rumba.
