Vinícola de Nulles

Wineries and wines, Catalonia, Tarragona, Cava
The cooperative Vinícola de Nulles was established in 1917. Shortly thereafter, a rival appeared in the form of another cooperative in the same town. Both merged as a result of the Spanish Civil War. The cellar, where the Vinícola de Nulles wine is still made, is a Modernista-style building designed by the prestigious Vallesan architect Cèsar Martinell. Inaugurated in 1921, members of the cooperative helped build it.

Declared Cultural Heritage of National Interest by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia in 2002, the Modernista-style cellar, with its typical parabolic arch, is one of the "cathedrals of wine" and the most emblematic monument in Nulles. Perfectly preserved, the cellar continues to benefit from the design, which allows light and temperature to have a positive influence on the winemaking process. The interior has been restored and remodelled to accommodate the cutting-edge fermentation control machinery used to make quality wine and cava. The outside face of the structure, a combination of exposed brick and stone, takes the form of a large double gate.

Vinícola de Nulles is a large wine company that works with the fruit from the 425 hectares of vineyards the 190 members own and produces a total of two million litres a year. 90% of production is devoted to base wine for cava, which is sold to large producers. On the other hand, they market about 270,000 bottles a year of a wide range of wines and cavas under the brand Adernats.

During the tour, they explain the wine and cava making process, the rudiments of the Catalan cooperative movement and the architectural history of the cellar. They always end the visit with a guided tasting of three wines. In addition, the cellar´s agro-food store sells the firm's wines and cavas as well as other regional products. Guests can also participate in VinitCultura, a once-a-month event which includes an on-site wine and food pairing with a wine tasting.
