Bird watching

Book
Each year, throughout the seasons, many bird species migrate thousands and thousands of kilometres to reach their most desired habitat, Catalonia. When they arrive, they integrate with the native birds, producing a great wealth of birdlife. These elements make Catalonia an attractive setting for bird-watching, which can be enjoyed along the existing routes through the various habitats.

One of the favourite destinations for birds, and also for bird-watching enthusiasts, is the Ebro Delta Natural Park (declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO), home to over 300 different bird species - half of the total number of bird species that exist in Europe. The park has bird-watching routes equipped with walkways, lookouts and information panels. There are also expert guides to accompany you.

Bird habitats
If there is one thing that characterises Catalonia, it is its varied natural spaces. There are aquatic habitats with observation routes such as the Natural Park of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, a key place to see aquatic birds such as the cattle egret, the purple heron or the squacco heron. In the Cap de Creus Natural Park, as well as the birds that can be seen on the open sea and near the cliffs, you can also admire the blue rock thrush, the black-eared wheatear or the Dartford warbler. There are also routes where you can observe birds in their mountain habitats, such as the National Park of Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici or the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, as well as volcanic environments such as the Natural Park of the Volcanic Area of La Garrotxa.

Routes dedicated to a single bird
In addition to routes through the natural parks, there are also those dedicated to a specific species, such as the bearded vulture or the eagle, throughout the Montsec mountain range, and even urban routes that allow you to discover the birds that live in Barcelona and its surroundings.

Grab your binoculars and enjoy the diversity of birdlife in Catalonia.

In Catalonia there is a whole compendium of highly diverse bird habitats: coastal wetlands, deciduous and coniferous forests in subalpine environments in the Pyrenees, areas with rockrose and undergrowth and Mediterranean vegetation in the coastal and pre-coastal areas. Here are just a few.

And on the other hand, it has set apart the area's bird life through the presence of a mix of rupicolous species from dry Mediterranean environments with other central European species.
