Serra d'Aubenç i Roc de Cogul Protected Natural Area

The contours of this natural area in the Pyrenean foothills in the region of Alt Urgell are quite interesting due to the steep, towering slopes and the wonderful views and landscapes. An attractive array of tree species can be seen in these forests of the Pyrenean foothills.

The Aubenç mountain range is a natural area in the western Pyrenean foothills in the region of Alt Urgell with a spectacular, rugged relief. It is of great biogeographical interest and is home to a wide variety of Mediterranean and Eurosiberian plant communities. In terms of wildlife, it is worth pointing out the species native to the ranges in the central Pyrenean foothills, in the valley of the Segre river, including large rupicolous birds of prey.

Hiking, climbing and motor sports are popular here. It is totally accessible via several mountain tracks.

The hermitages of Sant Miquel de les Masies and Santa María de Remolins, as well as some country houses and groups of houses, are the most important elements of cultural interest in this area.

Flora

The natural area maintains an interesting array of forest systems typical of the Pyrenean foothills, from English oak groves, to pine groves, beechwoods and remains of fir tree forests. In terms of plant life, it is worth mentioning the presence of numerous Eurosiberian species and extra-Mediterranean and oro-Mediterranean orophytes that are quite rare in Catalonia.

Fauna

Interesting populations of rupicolous birds of prey and Pyrenean species like the wood grouse, the black woodpecker, the edible dormouse and crowned shrews are maintained here.
