Plaça del Pallol ruins

Places of cultural or historical interest
The ruins of Plaça del Pallol correspond to part of the central gallery of the western side of the square that represents the Provincial Forum (1st century AD). These Roman remains were declared an Archaeological Area in 1931.

Plaça del Pallol is in the centre of the upper part of Tarragona. Here, architectural remains of the Roman forum, dating from the 1st century AD are preserved.

The vault and the Pallol arch correspond to a building that can now be found between dividing walls, of part of the central gallery of the western side of the square that represents this forum. More specifically the Pallol arcade formed part of the constructions of the great square of the Provincial Forum of Tarraco and must have been, in Roman times, a long gallery that ran behind the portico and was used to support a second floor. Externally the western wall of the arcade is conserved up to a height of 17.70 metres. It is made using the opus quadratum technique. A door with a semicircular arch opens into the wall that forms a part of the same building. The rest of the arcade was built using Roman concrete. It is 5.65 metres wide.

The current Plaça de Pallol is documented back to the 16th century under the name of Pla de Sant Feliu, although we know that it existed before that.

The Roman ruins of Plaça de Pallol were declared an Archaeological Area in 1931.
