Mas Blanch i Jove

Mas Blanch i Jove is a very peculiar winery created in 2006 in La Pobla de Cervoles. Two main elements converge in this project: the owners' passion for wine and the area of Les Garrigues, passed down from their grandparents, and a great admiration for art.

Mas Blanch i Jove is a very peculiar winery created in 2006 in La Pobla de Cervoles. Two main elements converge in this project: the owners’ passion for wine and the area of Les Garrigues, passed down from their grandparents, and a great admiration for art.

The connection to art can be seen in the cellar building, designed by a friend of the family and well-known Catalan painter Josep Guinovart, author of the mural In Vino Veritas, his last large piece of work, which hangs on one of the walls in the wine tasting room. He is also architect of the project La Vinya dels Artistes (The Artists’ Vineyard). It’s an open-air exhibition, set among the vines, which links painting, poetry, theatre, and music with wine, for, as the cellar’s owners say: «Wine is also a form of artistic expression». The exhibit includes works such as L'orgue de Camp (The Organ in the Field), by Guinovart; the boat on the holm oak, La Sargantaneta, by musician and composer Carles Santos; and La Llum plantant damunt la Terra (Light Hovering above Earth), a giant twenty-six-foot stock illuminated at night by sculptor Esteve Casanoves.

In terms of wine production, they obtain the grape from their five estates, located in the DO Costers de Segre, consisting of 11 hectares of vineyards planted with the red varieties Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Merlot and the white varieties Garnacha and Macabeo. From these grapes they obtain four fresh and elegant wines, all with the name Saó, which have been recognised by national and international reviewers.

Wine tourists will enjoy drinking a glass of wine while admiring several works of art. Tours (by appointment) include a walk through La Vinya dels Artistes, attending the harvest (depending on the season) or participating in a wine tasting course.
