The main advantage of this area is its proximity to Barcelona city centre and, more importantly, the airport, which even forms part of the Delta itself. This makes it an absolute must for ornithologists looking to combine city-based tourism with the chance to add new species to their lists. Moreover, the areas in questions are places where you'll encounter rarities every single year, especially during periods of migration.
The Llobregat Delta has a completely flat terrain with crop fields, small riverside treelines, coastal pine forests, wetlands, lagoons, and a coastline with beaches playing host to substrate herbaceous, which gives rise to the nesting of certain notable species, such as kentish plover. Being so close to Barcelona, you have to chance to visit in the morning and spend the evening enjoying the city. If you've been visiting Catalonia, you could also spend your last few hours visiting the Delta before you head to the airport.
Here you will find certain species that are very difficult to find within Europe. For example, Balearic shearwater, little bittern, little crake, moustached warbler and others. Another notable reason to take a quick visit is the large number of rare Neartic and Asian species that have been spotted by staff working in the nature reserves.
