Ecomuseu-Farinera de Castelló d'Empúries

Museum, Exhibition centre
Museum located in a flour mill from the late 19th century. During the visit, and by using interactive panels and audiovisual presentations, it is possible to see how the wheat was cleaned, its preparation to be milled and, finally, how it was milled.

As a testimony to one of the oldest activities in the area, the Ecomuseu-Farinera de Castelló d'Empúries preserves and promotes the heritage linked to flour production of.

Despite the origin of flour production in this town harking back to medieval times, the process was industrialised in the late 19th century with the construction of the factory that today houses the museum.

Today, the La Farinera building has three floors, erected on what was the Molí del Mig (mill in the middle), one of the three that used to be in the town.

The Austro-Hungarian system was implemented here during industrialisation, thanks to which white flour could be produced for the first time. The complex circuit involved vertically transporting wheat and flour through the machines situated on the three floors of the building.

A visit to La Farinera provides a look at the entire process via a descriptive tour that explains the three main steps involved in producing flour. First it is cleaned, eliminating any impurities in the wheat. Then the grain is prepared to be milled. And last, the actual milling takes place, which gradually separates the flour from the bran.

The Ecomuseum also shows visitors the various types of wheat, flour and bread that are the final products.

The process is described with interactive and audiovisual aids. Visitors can also learn about the surroundings of the factory and the relationships between the territory and the companies that have operated there.

The Ecomuseu-Farinera forms part of the Sistema del Museu de la Ciència i la Tècnica de Catalunya (System of Museums of Science and Technology of Catalonia) and the Xarxa de Turisme Industrial de Catalunya (Industrial Tourism Network of Catalonia).
