Caves Rosell i Formosa

The Rosell and Formosa families from Monistrol d'Anoia and Sant Sadurní were historically owners of vineyards who used to sell grapes to wine and cava makers in the area. When they became in-laws, Mr. Rosell and Mr. Formosa decided to join forces and produce their own cava, which they started bottling in 1948.

When they became in-laws, Mr. Rosell and Mr. Formosa decided to join forces and produce their own cava, which they started bottling in 1948.

Currently, the children of both manage the family business, which depends on thequality base wine produced by two or three selected suppliers to bottle the 180,000 cava bottles they market every year, in addition to a small quantity of DO Penedès wine to complete the range.

The visit to Rosell & Formosa, located in the centre of the town of Sant Sadurní, includes a tour of the old cellars, built by the founders themselves with pick and spade, and which boast the attraction of a tunnel that runs underneath one of the streets of this Penedès town. All this is made even more attractive by the explanations regarding the cava production process.

The visit ends with a tasting of the firm’s products: white cavas produced with the varieties Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada and rosé cavas made with Garnacha and Monastrell. A large part of their sales are made at the foot of the cellar or by home delivery. A few years ago, they began exporting to several countries in the European Union.
