Wineries and wines, Costers del Segre

From the end of the 19th century to 1950, Castell del Remei Winery experienced its greatest glory under the leadership of Ignasi Girona and his brother Joan. They were the impetus for the complete renovation of the company to meet the rising demand resulting from the phylloxera plague in France.

They brought a wine expert and four families of farmers from Bordeauxand under their own brand bottled some of the first bottles that appeared in Catalonia. However, starting in 1950, the firm slowly began to decline until, in 1982, it was acquired by the Cusiné family.

At the beginning of the 1990s, the new owners carried out a full-scale restructuring and modernisation of the cellar to restore prestige to Castell del Remei.

The Castell del Remei winery, the second most prominent of theDO Costers del Segre after Raimat, dates back to 1780. It was built by the Girona family for the production of the first crianza, or aged, Catalan wines.

The winery consists of six attached buildings, with a wrought-iron structure on semi-buried stone walls up to two-feet thick. Visitors can learn about the historical evolution of winemaking and see the ancient wooden vessels, the more recent concrete vats and the present-day stainless steel tanks.

Castell del Remei offers a complete, very interesting visit of the 400-hectareestate and the numerous buildings that make it up. The most interesting areas for the visitor are the barrel roomswhere Castell del Remei's best wines are aged. At the end of the visit, visitors can sample the winery's products.

In addition to the cellar, other buildings also stand out. These can be observed and admired on a relaxed stroll through this isolated spot in the municipality of Penelles. The castle makes for a stunning setting, though it cannot be visited. Also intriguing is the small sanctuaryMare de Déu del Remei, where some ceremonies are celebrated.

Completing the picture are the restaurant, oil mill, flour mill, distillery, and workshop spaces that bear testimony to a time when some fifty families lived here. They enjoyed the status of a colony, which granted them certain privileges, such as exemption from military service.
