The origins of this company can be traced back to the 1923, when Barcelona businessman Miquel Mateu Pla acquired Perelada Castle. His idea was to recover the winemaking tradition of Carmelite friars.
Ever since the company has only grown and improved. Today, they cultivate 150 hectares of vineyards, spread among five estates in the municipalities of Perelada, Garriguella, Pont de Molins, Colera and Espolla, of a wide range of varieties: the reds Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, Merlot, Tempranillo, Syrah, Garnacha, Cariñena and Monastrell and the whites Chardonnay, Macabeo, Cariñena Blanca and Sauvignon Blanc.
Castillo Peralada Winery has the highestsales of all wineries assigned to the DO Empordà, though not all of its products are sold under that label of origin. Also, eight million of the thirteen million bottles they sell are the famous sparkling wines Blanc Pescador and Cresta Rosa, while three million are cavas under the DO Cava. In other words, the wines under the DO Empordà represent less than two million bottles.
Castillo Peralada has a forerunner in the enotourism business in Catalonia and takes special care of its guests. The tour includes the cellars, the Carmelite convent and its library, the Glass Museum and the Wine Museum, a visit of the vineyards and a wine tasting .
Castillo Perelada guides accompany guests at all times, providing an in-depth explanation of the winery's history and operation.
