Bodegues Sumarroca

The Sumarroca family produced wine for several generations in the town of Llimiana, in the Pallars Jussà region. In the 1980s, this winemaking tradition, led by Carles Sumarroca, was moved to DO Penedès.

At this time, they installed the winery for the production of wine and cava in one of the two estates they had acquired, Molí Coloma (in Subirats), consisting of 36 hectares. The other estate, Heretat Sabartés (in Banyeres del Penedès), is made up of 25 hectares. However, it was not until 1999 that the firm became the largest winery in the Alt Penedès region in terms of extension of the land, following the purchase of the old Marquès de Monistrol Estate consisting of 403 hectares, which they christened with the family name.

On their 464 hectares, they cultivate more than fifteen varieties of of native and foreign grapes, including the white varieties Macabeo, Chardonnay, Muscat, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Parellada, Xarel·lo and Gewürztraminer and the reds Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The winery, updated with state-of-the-art technology, produces 2.5 million bottles of cava and wine marketed primarily in Catalonia (except for 35% set aside for export).

Both the Penedès landscapes and the charming buildings on the winery's estates, which include the Santa Creu hermitage, are open to wine tourism activities (in groups of a minimum of 15 people). The winery's extensive installations can accommodate all types of events and conventions which, in addition, are complemented by a wine tasting course. These courses (beginner or advanced) are also available for smaller groups.

At Sumarroca, they believe that wine is the best accompaniment to a good meal. To this end, they prepare imaginative daily menus with local and seasonal ingredients as well as lunches out in the vineyards. If the visit coincides with the September harvest, visitors can take part in collecting the grapes.
