La Bisbal d’Empordà, capital of Baix Empordà, is a town known in particular because of its excellent popular and decorative ceramics, an activity that is clearly evident in the municipality due to the industrial chimney stacks and the many specialised shops.

It is located on the plain of Empordá, at the last northern buttresses of Gavarres, and the Daró river runs through it. The castle-palace of la Bisbal and the Terracotta Museum are the municipality's main attractions, without forgetting the ceramicists' workshops and shops.

Economic activity

Agriculture still employs a large percentage of the working population; dry farming predominates, although irrigated land exists as well. The primary livestock raised are housed pigs and cattle; there are also small poultry farms. Industry has recently begun to carry more weight. The ceramic and tile industry is especially noteworthy. The textile and food product sectors also boost the municipality’s industry. The cork industry has lost the significance it had between the 19th and 20th centuries, although there are still two companies that work in this field.
