Flora

The area offers a Mediterranean landscape, but with a certain continental feel, a factor which is indicated by the dominance of the kermes oak grove (Quercetum rotundifoliae).

The flooded environments along the edges of the riverbed are occupied by marsh vegetation including hygrophytes and helophytes, which play an important role.

Here, we can also find other communities, like fescues (Thero-Brachypodion) or humid grasslands (Molinio-Holoschoenion).

Among the more unique floral elements, we mustn’t forget to mention Petrocoptis montsicciana, a rupicolous species endemic to the Pyrenean foothills and catalogued as being of European interest.

Fauna

As the area boasts different environments and a certain geographic isolation, the presence of some relevant species is encouraged such as the Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus), the bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) and the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus). Likewise, the reservoirs in the area provide an important refuge for wintering birds, as well as numerous nesting species, such as the great reed warbler (Acrocephalus arundinaceus), the great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus), the purple heron (Ardea purpurea) or the black tern (Chlidonias niger).

Otters (Lutra lutra) have also been observed on the shores in this area and the caves house numerous bat colonies, such as the bent-winged bat (Miniopterus schreibersii), the Mediterranean horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus euryale), the lesser mouse-eared bat (Myotis Blyth) or the long-fingered bat (Myotis capaccinii).

Among the fish, we must point out the twait shad (Alosa fallax) as one of the most interesting specimens.
